Mk2 Punto Sporting Turbo

Post by munkul on Sun Mar 07, 2010 11:18 pm

I bought it two years ago bog standard, 39k on the clock. As it was when i bought it:

I then put coilovers on and did a few small mods, until a deer redecorated my front end, so i decided to start modifying it properly. It ended up looking like this, with an Abarth kit and deep dish alloys:

I then decided i wanted some boost in my life, so the deep dish alloys went and brakes were upgraded

I spent a while making an exhaust manifold

Turbo was brand new, its a Garrett GT1549 from a rover, actuator was modified to 0.6bar opening pressure

Inlet manifold modified to take 4 extra injectors. I couldnt justify standalone management for a number of reasons, so a seperate fuelling controller was used, with its own MAP sensor and set of sequential injectors. This works alongside the stock engine management and only injects when on boost.

A Greddy REBIC IV was used as the controller

Cerametallic paddle clutch

decompression plate

boost, oil temp and AFR gauges were added

Mocal oil cooling setup with 13 row cooler

Missed out a lot of stuff, including all the problems i had, but you get the gist.

Rolling roaded it and heres the results

145bhp and 150lb-ft, not bad for a "bodged" management setup and a restrictive exhaust Smile

Here is the current spec:

Awsome i love it Very Happy

i may be going into the same management setup when i go mpi to keep my o.e injector till i can afford standalone setup, id love to see what this engine could do with the GT17 i have, it would probably make 200bhp @ 0.8-0.9 bar! with the right management, and punto's earnt exactly heavy either haha.

cheers, yeah i want to turn the boost up a little more and hopefully hit 160bhp at 0.8bar once the exhaust is changed.

Not sure how the 9.1:1 CR bottom end will like that, but one way or another I'll find out Very Happy

you have active knock control on your car though dont you?, i made 0.65bar on a 9:1 c/r once by using 97 ron, an intercooler and abit off luck, so you may have scope to go a little higher if the engine can manage to retard the timming enough if knock is detected.

This much is true. I wont be turning the boost up until i get back to the dyno anyways, so any strange power losses can be found out straight away.

Very Happy good stuff that mate i likes, no sign of "ripspeed" and a nice engine to go with, how a punto should be rather than the usual stuff 18 year old lads throw at them

turbo

Post by 1250cinqturbo (ADMIN) on Sat Jul 03, 2010 9:07 pm

Munkul..............

just read a post on FF off yours that interested me a little, you mention that your oil seals in the turbo seep sometimes at different temps using what i believe to be 10w/40 fully syn? how did you come to find out.....does it smoke etc or you find evidence in the pipes?

Just sounds similar to my issue with the intermittent smoke that i no is coming from the turbo. Mine too seeps oil at certain temps (hotter the worse for me) and i believe my 5w/40 fully syn isnt helping as much as its helping the engine.

hows the car btw......still waiting for some time on it?

thanks

jason

yeah its fully synth 10w-40.

Actually im not so sure about my theory now i have found out that the turbo is designed for fully synth 5w-40 anyways - 10w-40 isnt going to make a big difference to that.

Its interesting that we both suffer that problem. Mine has just started to happen after 4000 miles on this turbo from new. What happens is if i am bringing it up to temp, it starts to smoke a little on idle at around 80 degrees oil temp. Then i pull away and it smokes quite a bit on boost. once or twice i have seen a massive cloud of smoke behind me when pulling away.

Then i rag the feck off it for a few miles, and the smoke stops completely (by this time the oil temp is 85-90, or sometimes higher). Again, its intermittent and i couldn't reproduce the problem if i tried to, it only does it on its own accord.

I think its maybe related to the weaker seals in diesel turbos (or so i have heard) and something about the oil pressure at idle, maybe at a certain temperature as well.

Strangely, i havent used any oil at all - check it regularly and it hasnt moved since the last oil change.

Cheers mate, the car is now off the road for a few weeks while i sort out this megasquirt stuff.

Re: Mk2 Punto Sporting Turbo

Post by 1250cinqturbo (ADMIN) on Sun Jul 04, 2010 11:00 pm

Its very interesting that they seem to suffer the same (even with my turbo being new), and your idea of weaker seals on diesel turbo's may well be correct, im really not sure if mine has the petrol seals or diesel due to it running the GT15 centre housing from the VW. But having said that i no it runs the GT17 larger shaft and bearings so it must use petrol seals...........

I can normally make mine smoke simply by thrashing the nuts of it then letting it idle and within 30seconds it's smoking like a good en, but if i simply raise the revs up to 1000 or just over it stops straight away. To be honest its always been that intermittent that even changing oil grades etc hasn't shown a change because its not permanent enough to tell. And i think mine to occasionally kicks a cloud out when setting off.....then nothing.

I think on mine its a mix between, as you say the oil pressure on idle, low back pressure on idle in the exhaust (which would explain the smoke going with revs).
I found that my turbo is actually meant to run on 5w/40 syn also so im ok there, but my oil return isnt great!

Its a bugger ey!, ive become that embarrassed ive resorted to removing the idle control in favour of a fixed higher idle speed off 1300-1350rpm which stops the smoke, makes it run smoother, it pulls better in traffic having that little extra torque.

Anyway glad to hear you going ahead fitting the MS soon...

thanks

jason

Well, you've probably all seen the Megasquirt standalone management thread... thought id try to keep updates over here instead lol

Wheels

Boost control solenoid and control pipes. I need to give the bay a freshen up though i think Sad

Missile style toggle for launch control/flatshift. It gets flicked way too often though lol

I bought a Sytec fuel pressure gauge and block, so i could see pressure at idle. I cant remember what i was told it runs at, but now i know it runs 3.5 bar from a standard returnless pump. The fun will be trying to read the gauge when the car is next on the rollers!

The gauge itself is removable and a small bung replaces it when i no longer need it.

hello baddy !

Post by Ellassog on Sat Sep 18, 2010 7:36 pm

First of all I want to tell you congratulations for the project ,... I may make one copy to mine !I have the 75 punto 1250 cc with MPI , and I want to ask for some ideas, is there any cheaper idea than yours that will make me happy ? LoL ...
I have in my mind to follow some way the cinq turbo ... Cause of the way that gives the power .. But I have prob, in choosing fueling method (how will feed the engine , maybe 4 extra beck like this you make firstly .. or 4 beck about 300cc each ? this is what I have in mind .. ) About the Ecu ,, what is the best to work .. ? I dont want to mess with technicals and enginners ,, I want to make everything on my own ..
Many thanks and WELL DONE for your italian Monster ...
Greetings From Greece ...
Stelios ..

cheers bud... with regards to fuelling/management you can do whatever you want with the punto 75, you can just run extra injectors with a seperate controller, or ditch the standard ecu and run a proper mappable ecu. Whatever you do you will need it tuned properly, preferably on a steady state rolling road, so speak to your local tuner.

Re: Mk2 Punto Sporting Turbo

Post by munkul on Wed Oct 27, 2010 9:47 pm

well not much updates... since finishing the massive headache that was MS2-Extra and getting power up to 160bhp, the car has proved reliable enough, getting the nuts thrashed off it most days. Only casualties were an overheated clutch and blown wideband sensor at a drag day after 13-14 runs... heheh

So the last 2 weeks it has been at a bodyshop getting a few bad bits sorted bodywork wise - the skirts, tailgate and rear quaters were all chipped/damaged and looked poor close up. So now it is 99.9% perfect bodywork wise.

Got the car back home tonight, i had bought this toy for it:

TiAl copy wastegate, the plan is/was to have a screamer pipe and get rid of boost creep.

But not sure it will be possible now - the limited space and collector height means that wastegate outlet positioning wont be even and collect mostly gasses from a single cylinder.

Back to the drawing board....
